The Return to Revolution

The Return to Revolution
30 Years of Conflict and Compromise
in the
Islamic Republic of Iran

Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born
.

William Butler Yeats

I plant my hands in the small garden—
I will grow green—
I know
I know
I know
And sparrows will nest and egg
In the grooves
In between my inky fingers.

Forough Farrokhzad

I will now begin a multi-series post of a long history of the Islamic Republic of Iran starting with the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and culminating with the Green Movement protests following the rigged election of June 2009. These 30 years saw both conflict and compromise and a complete transformation of Iran.

My goal is to explain how all of this happened and why we ended up where we are today. Each post will deal with different periods of history during the last 30 years.

If you are interested in a definitive history of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I hope you will follow my posts.
