There are rumors swirling that Karroubi will be arrested after the Qods day ceremonies and the regime has not done so yet because they do not want to get people upset before Friday.
Grand Ayatollah Ali-Mohammad Dastgheyb has warned against such arrests:
"We recommend [the authorities] to not decide to arrest these two honorable men. Instead, the can talk to them and such a gesture will calm people. We know both. They are competent and loyal to the imam," he said, alluding to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.
He criticized the accusations of "treason and enmity" attributed to Mousavi and Karroubi.
"We have to watch out for future consequences. We issue no threats, but it would not be good to see people vent their frustration," the grand ayatollah, based in the southern city of Shiraz, added.
"Everyone knows we have never triggered riots and we have only sought reforms. We only try to orientate people towards God and we expect nothing from nobody," he noted.
The ayatollah also warned against any interference of military organs in political affairs. "The Bassij [militia] and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps are respected children of this society, but it is not correct to let them meddle with politics and their interference will touch off negative consequences," he said.
