Khomeini Controversy and the Evolution of Green Movement

So the regime has claimed that protesters burned a picture of Khomeini during the 16 of Azar protests and have repeatedly shown a clip on state television. However the clip is suspicious because it clearly looks staged. Indeed the leaders of the Green Movement have said that the regime faked the whole thing so they would have an excuse to crack down.

Although the leaders of the Green Movement have said they support the vision of Khomeini and oppose burning his image, it is interesting to see that they have said nothing about burning the image of Khamenei which also took place on 16 of Azar and was probably not fake. Given that the Green leaders did not condemn those burnings, it is clear that they no longer view Khamenei as a scared figure. By supporting Khomeini and not Khamenei is shows they believe in the original vision of the Islamic Republic, but not in its current dictatorial form. As a result, the end goal of the Green Movement has evolved to the eventual removal of Khamenei to once again create a true Islamic Republic.
