What is Rafsanjani Up To?

Today is a holy day in Islam because it is the day that the angel Gabriel told Muhammad that he is a Prophet. Supreme Leader Khamenei has invited many senior clerics to join him in celebrating the day. However, it is important to note that former President Rafsanjani has instead gone to the holy city of Mashhad in Eastern Iran to meet with top clerics:

Rafsanjani is head of a clerical body within the government known as the Assembly of Experts. This body can theoretically remove the Supreme Leader and replace him with a new leader. Rumors have been swirling since the election that Rafsanjani wants to do precisely this to Khamenei. While we have no indication of how likely this is, it is interesting that Rafsanjani is meeting with senior clerics on his own. At the very least it shows that these senior clerics are not going to blindly follow whatever the regime tells them to do.
