The Tragedy of Cleric Seyyed Mohammad Ali Abtahi and Others on Trial

Seyyed Mohammad Ali Abtahi in happier times

Abtahi in the center during the current trial after he has no doubt gone through torture

Seyyed Mohammad Ali Abtahi is a former Vice-President of Iran for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs. He is a cleric and a descendant of the prophet Muhammad.

Sadly to this regime, he is also a common criminal who is currently in court for a show trial. The authorities claim that he has "confessed" to crimes, but it is hard to tell if has actually done that. Even if he did "confess", it is without a doubt a result of torture.

Abtahi's wife who was allowed to see him said he "had lost 10 kilos in 43 days."

There are also nearly 100 innocent people who are sharing his faith of a show trial. Among them, other prominent Iranians: Abdollah Ramezanzadeh, former Vice Speaker of parliament Behzad Nabavi, former Deputy Foreign Minister Mohsen Aminzadeh and leader of the biggest reformist party, the Islamic Iran Participation Front, Mohsen Mirdamadi.

According to the head of the reformist bloc in Parliament Mohammad-Reza Tabesh, "The method used in the trials of those arrested in which they [the prisoners] do not have access to lawyers and neither the detainees nor their families are aware of the charges [they are facing] has left everyone in a state of shock."

What is going on with Abtahi and the others is a tragedy for the Iranian nation. Abtahi is simply a man of God who believes that freedom and democracy are an important part of Islam. For this belief, he has been put in jail and forced to go on trial for false charges. Hopefully those people who still support this regime will see reality and realize that those in power right now are actually the one's that are against Islam. Let's hope and pray that Abtahi and all political prisoners will be released soon and this regime will never be able to do this to anyone again because it will be gone.

Abtahi came to the attention of many Americans and Iranian-Americans through his interview on the Daily Show at the last part of this clip:

  1. Every time I think about this or look again, I get sick! So disrespectful to these people. In my fantasy, it would be great if someone arrested the right people, those that are deceitful.
