Ayatollah Yossuf Sanei is one of the most senior clerics in Iran and he is also one of the most progressive Ayatollahs. After Grand Ayatollah Montazeri, Sanei is perhaps the most respected Ayatollah within the reformist movement in Iran. Sanei has spoken out against the fraudulent elections and the treatment of the opposition.
Here is a video from before the election in which they follow the day to day affairs of Sanei so you have an idea for influence and importance of Ayatollahs in Iran. It is interesting to see that much of their work is very ordinary and politics is not often the focus of their lives:
