After getting into trouble for calling Ahmadinejad the elected leader of Iran, White House Press Secretary clarifies what he meant:
"Let me correct a little bit of what I said yesterday. I denoted that Mr. Ahmadinejad was the elected leader of Iran. I would say that's not for me to pass judgment on. He's been inaugurated. That's a fact. Whether any election was fair, obviously the Iranian people still have questions about that, and we'll let them decide about that."
Obviously Gibbs choose a poor choice of words, but at the same time it discredits the idea that the uprising has been led by America. In any event it is better to error on this side of not getting involved than giving the regime any chance to crack down harder on the opposition.
