The recent calls by hardliners within the regime to put Mousavi and Khatami on trial just shows the hypocrisy of this trial and the insanity of those who are loyal to the regime.
A headline in the hardline newspaper Kayhan said, "Evidence of Khatami and Mousavi's treason unveiled." The article goes on to say "the plot leaders are corrupt people whose unforgiveable crimes include killing innocent people and cooperating with foreign enemies. But trying and punishing the mid-ranking elements cannot be the end of story. If the main instigators of unrest who are known are not confronted, they will continue conspiring."
The regime clearly does not have the evidence or the popular support to actually put Mousavi and Khatami on trial. Mousavi is arguably the most popular man in the country right now and Khatami was President of Iran just 4 years ago.
Yet the hardliners does bring up the point that the "confessions" supposedly reveal that Khatami and Mousavi were leading the unrest. The fact that they have not been charged shows the hypocrisy of this trial which is only meant to scare the reformists by putting on trial a few poor members of the opposition. This trial has nothing to do with seeking justice, but it is rather meant to intimidate the people of Iran. The hardliners cannot realize that they are the real criminals and that hopefully one day they will be the ones on trial.
